1997 CPT manual includes orthopedic, cardiology coding changes

Division of Physician Payment Systems

The 1997 Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) manual contains coding changes that will affect general pediatricians, pediatric medical specialists and pediatric surgical subspecialists. Following are the new and revised CPT codes and modifiers for 1997:

E/M guidelines

The language "and/or interpretation" has been added to the last paragraph of the "Levels of E/M Services" to clarify reporting of E/M codes and diagnostic tests/studies. This language was added to further clarify that actual performance and/or interpretation of diagnostic tests/studies "ordered during a patient encounter" are not included in the levels of E/M services and may be reported separately by the physician and in addition to an Evaluation and Management service provided during the encounter.
