With detailed behavioral cue advice from a trained observer, one breastfeeding mother was able to help her healthy preterm infant achieve greater wakefulness and more efficient sucking, potentially laying groundwork for preterm infant breastfeeding guidelines. In a descriptive case report of a girl studied at 29 weeks gestational age, Finnish researchers gauged breastfeeding results before and after the mother received advice based on the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP).
