The decade of the 1990s will be remembered as a period of rapid change in the health care delivery system. While federal and state legislatures debated the health care reform question, the health care delivery system witnessed an accelerated movement toward capitated, managed-care arrangements, vertically and horizontally integrated delivery systems, and innovative physician-compensation systems. As primary-care physicians, pediatricians are being courted by managed-care plans, hospitals and even employers, to affiliate with their organizations.
