Public-health experts are considering adult pertussis immunization after last year's epidemics sparked debate over whether childhood vaccines provide adequate protection. With 6,586 reported national cases, the 1993 outbreaks represented the highest number of pertussis cases since 1967, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials. Government officials say the crisis is over, but last year's Chicago and Cincinnati epidemics still weigh on their minds. In Cincinnati, 352 diagnosed pertussis cases occurred, while 218 cases were confirmed in Chicago.
