When adults fight, children get caught in the middle. As in an ugly divorce, Cuba's government publicly charges the United States with wanton disregard for her children. The island's defenders say the ongoing U.S. embargo would steal food from children's mouths, and deny them necessities of clean water and medical care if it weren't for the island wisely rationing its supplies. The United States counters, claiming Cuba's own political and social policies place the island's children in harm's way. Cuba is an immoral and unfit parent, the United States claims, and cannot be entrusted with her own welfare, let alone her children's.
