AMA, drug agency face off over fee hike

The U.S. justice department and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) are urging the dismissal of a lawsuit filed by the American Medical Association (AMA) and several organizations alleging that the agency illegally hiked fees for those who dispense controlled substances.

In this climate of increased physician regulation, the AMA, American Dental Association and others view the DEA hike — which, at $70 for an annual registration to dispense controlled substances, is three-and-a-half times the previous rate of $20 — as an additional and unjustified burden.
