At age 15 months, a baby girl who will never reach consciousness sends physicians, ethicists, lawyers, religious fundamentalists and health care financing experts reeling into the debate over appropriate application of medical science and, most profoundly, the grounds for sustaining life. "Baby K" was born anencephalic on Oct. 13, 1992, at Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va. (See AAP News, October 1993, page 5.) Baby K's unmarried mother, Ms. H, was advised during pregnancy that her fetus would be born missing most of her brain, federal court documents state.
