While the Academy has used a swaddled baby as its insignia since the early 1940s, the history of the symbol dates back to the Middle Ages. The founder of this Florentine family was Luca della Robbia, who established a workshop of artists devoted to sculpture and ceramics. Luca della Robbia's most talented pupil was his nephew. Andrea della Robbia, who is credited with creating the first eight of the medallions depicting a swaddled Christ child that appear on the foundling hospital Ospedale Delli Innocenti in Florence.
