No connection exists between sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP), an in-depth, nationwide study shows. In the study, which was conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), epidemiologists analyzed 716 SIDS cases and found that only 40 percent of the SIDS victims had received DTP shots. The study refutes reports that have suggested a link between SIDS and DTP shots and reaffirms the earlier findings of a 1982 NICHD analysis which concluded: "DTP immunization is not a factor in the etiology of SIDS."
