Citing the need to improve children's television programming, two federal lawmakers introduced a bill this month to Congress that would require television stations to air seven hours of weekly educational programming for children. The proposed legislation, called "The Children's Television Educational Act of 1985," was introduced by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Rep. Timothy Wirth (D-Colo.) to help stem the slide of available programming for the nation's children. Currently, about four hours of children's programming is aired per week, down from about 10 hours in 1974.
