Diary of Baby Doe

1982

April 9

A child born in Bloomington, Ind. is diagnosed tentatively as having Down's Syndrome and a tracheo-esophageal fistula. The latter condition, an abnormal connection between the trachea and esophagus that prevents normal eating, is correctable surgically. The child's parents sign a statement saying, in effect, that they do not want the surgery performed. The attorney for the hospital contacts the County Circuit Court and makes arrangements for a hearing the following day.

April 10

The court determines that the parents of "Baby Doe" have a right to choose a recommended course of treatment for their child.
