More mothers see pediatricians as adolescent care experts

Significantly more mothers think of pediatricians as the best-qualified providers of health care for adolescents.

A recent study conducted to gauge the effectiveness of the Academy's "New Age for Pediatrics" program indicated that 28 percent of the mothers polled described the pediatrician as a "specialist through adolescence." In a benchmark survey conducted in 1982, prior to the "New Age" program's inauguration, only 13 percent recognized the pediatrician as a physician qualified to treat teenagers. The followup study also reflected growing confidence in pediatricians as a source of treatment for alcoholism and drug abuse (25 percent vs. 18 percent).
