Cigarette tax setback Recent efforts to prevent a roll back of the cigarette excise tax have gone up in smoke. On a 49 to 47 vote, the Senate defeated an amendment sponsored by Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.) that would have preserved the 16 cents per package cigarette tax and earmarked the additional revenues to Medicare. A second amendment, aimed at extending the 16-cent tax as a means to reduce the deficit, also lost by a vote of 50 to 46. Unless Congress acts, the tax automatically reverts to 8 cents a package on Oct. 1, 1985. (See April AAP News.)
