Increasing premiums create rising concerns

Russell B. Puschak M.D., FAAP1

1 Allentown, Pa.

I am very concerned with the increase in liability insurance premiums for pediatricians in Pennsylvania. I have been notified that Medical Protective Company, which has insured me for the past 24 years, now is placing pediatricians in a new rate category. This increases my premium by more than 100 percent.

Perhaps this is because neonatologists and pediatricians are classified together as one group under the new rate category. If this is so, consideration should be given to separating general pediatricians from those pediatricians who are practicing high-risk medicine, such as neonatologists, surgeons and subspecialists.
