Call for sodium content labels

George R. Alpert M.D., FAAP1

1 Laguna Hill, Calif.

Only a few food products on the market list the sodium content of the package in addition to nutritional data. I believe the U.S. Food and Drug Administration should require that all food companies label the sodium content of the package, if any sodium is present. I also would like to suggest that the Academy support this action.

This would be a great help to those on low salt diets and those concerned with hypertension. The same, of course, applies to pediatric foods.
