• Mississippi Chapter officials report that a three-year effort to improve access to health care for children and pregnant women culminated recently with the passage of the Optional Categorically Needy component of the state Medicaid program.

Under the new law, married, poor pregnant women and children of the married poor will become eligible for Medicaid for the first time on July 1. Until now, eligibility for Medicaid in Mississippi was tied to the Aid to Dependent Children program and only entitled unmarried women and children in single parent families to services.
