T. Bear spreads word on handwashing to prevent hospital-acquired infection

Academy members and chapter leaders can join in an innovative national program aimed at reducing the level of hospital-acquired infections in children.

The T. Bear program, which will be announced formally this month by Health and Human Services Secretary Margaret M. Heckler, recognizes that handwashing provides the best prevention against nosocomial infections. It is estimated that hospital-acquired infections cause 20,000 deaths each year and contribute to the deaths of more than 60,000 patients.
