A collaborative study designed to reduce the rate of mental retardation and other congenital defects occurring in the offspring of mothers with controlled phenylketonuria (PKU) has been launched by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and four medical centers. A congenital metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to convert phenylalanine into tyrosine, PKU occurs in one of every 14,000 births, or five newborns a week, in the United States.
