AAP outlnes responses to point raised in `20/20' program

The Academy's meeting on the supply of pertussis vaccine came one week after the February 5 broadcast of a segment on DTP by ABC-TV's "20/20" program. The close timing was coincidental; AAP leaders had called the meeting weeks before the broadcast was scheduled.

The "20/20" program emphasized that "No one questions that the risk/benefit ratio overwhelmingly favors DPT." However, many AAP members' offices received questions from parents concerned about inaccurate information presented in the program. In a February 15 letter to members, AAP President Robert J. Haggerty, M.D., outlined several points to help pediatricians respond to parents' concerns:
