Saying that there would be "a national health crisis" if the remaining distributors of any one of the childhood vaccines are forced to discontinue marketing, AAP President Robert J. Haggerty, M.D., has asked U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Margaret M. Heckler to develop a federal contingency plan to ensure that there will be no interruption in the nation's supply of all childhood vcccines. In a February 25 letter to Heckler, Dr. Haggerty noted that escalating liability costs, manufacturng difficulties or natural disasters "could destroy our naltion's vaccine supply."
