AAP News Vol. 1 No. 2 February 1985, p. 1 © 1985 American Academy of Pediatrics
Concerned that proposed federal regulations on the treatment of severely ill newborns are far too restrictive, members of an AAP task force met January 23 with U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., FAAP, to outline their objections. The rules were proposed in December by the Department of Health and Human Services to implement an amendment to the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act. The AAP's main concern is that the proposed rules distort the law's language language which was agreed to by a coalition that included the Academy, other professional organizations and disability groups.
