Stresses particular to children who come from low-income families may make them do worse in school, but when parents and school professionals work together, these trends can be reversed. "School is something less meaningful to kids with a low-income background," stated James Comer, M.D., Maurice Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Yale University Child Study Center. "They aren't able to identify in a positive way with teachers and school programs. They feel like school isn't their place, like they're not valued there."
