Alcohol use may signal more serious risk-taking behavior

Increased alcohol use by children and adolescents may be an early warning that signals the development of more serious and damaging risk-taking behavior, such as drug use or even a suicide attempt, warned an expert who treats emotionally troubled youths.

Larry Silver, M.D., who is clinical director of the Devereux Foundation in Devon, Penn., reported that using alcohol is one of the more common ways that vulnerable children and adolescents move into serious risk-taking behavior. Dr. Silver presented an in-depth report on this topic at the joint plenary session between the AAP and the American Academy of Child Psychiatry.
