Expert addresses assumptions on child development

Questions about what fosters good development in children cannot be based on the assumption that children are always better off at home, noted development expert Sandra Scarr, Ph.D., in her keynote address at the AAP Annual Meeting.

In a speech titled "Expert Advice: How Useful for Today's Mothers and Children?," Scarr suggested that the public can no longer cling to 19th century notions about mothers and babies. Scarr is chairman of the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.
