Academy members in California last fall came within a whisker of achieving on the state level what the AAP hopes to accomplish nationally through the Child Health Incentives Reform Plan (CHIRP)to ensure that health insurance policies cover children's health supervision services. A bill which originated with AAP District IX would have required that health insurance policies "provide benefits for the comprehensive preventive health care of minors." Moreover, by specifying that the covered comprehensive health services be "consistent with standards established by the American Academy of Pediatrics," the legislation would have ensured that practitioners be reimbursed for services they performed under the AAP's Guidelines for Health Supervision.
