A five-pound newborn with a detective heart presented Robin Doroshow, M.D., FAAP, with the greatest challenge of her career. The patient, known as Baby Fae, also challenged medical community thinking as well as opinions held across the nation regarding the use of animal organs for human transplants. "It was such an unanticipated part of my career," Dr. Doroshow said in a recent telephone interview with, AAP News of her role in the historic baboon-heart transplant operation. "I'm still trying to sort it out."
